Thayer's Life of Beethoven, Part I by Elliot Forbes (Editor)
Publisher: Princeton University Press; Revised edition (January 1, 1991)
Thayer's Life is the definitive Beethoven biography. The book touches every aspect of the great composer's life; there is not a stone that is left uncovered. You will find in its 605 pages all the info you might need to know about Beethoven. Even though the first edition appeared at the beginning of the 20th century the book is still very accurate. This book is a must have for anyone who considers him/herself a true Beethoven admirer.

Beethoven: The Music and the Life by Lewis Lockwood.
    Publisher: W. W. Norton & Company; 1st edition (December 16, 2002)
This is, in our opinion, an outstanding introduction to Beethoven's musical creation, aimed at the non-specialist rather than the scholar. So if you are just a "Beethoven rookie" interested in understanding his compositions, this is the perfect book for you. You will be introduced to Beethoven's most important musical creations explained in the context of his development as a composer. Even thou the book only creates a basic picture of Beethoven's life it will greatly increase the reader's understanding of Beethoven and his music.

Beethoven by Maynard Solomon.
Publisher: Schirmer Books; 2nd Rev edition (September 1, 2001)
Maynard Solomon is one of the most appreciated Beethoven scholars. This book takes the reader one step forward in the analysis of Beethoven. Unlike Thayer's biography, which is read almost like a diary and presents only the certain facts without interpretations, Solomon's book is more an interpretation of Beethoven's life and music rather than a biography. So our recommendation would be to read first Thyer's biography if you are not a Beethoven expert, as Solomon's interpretations are sometimes controversial.
